Northamptonshire has had more than its fair share of battles, sieges and skirmishes throughout its history, no doubt due in part to its strategic location in the centre of England.
Over the next few pages we give a brief introduction to them. Some of the battles etc. are only know from the briefest of comments in contemporary chronicles and the exact site still needs to be found.
It will be seen from them that the county played a key part in the history of England, and it could be claimed that the county is the home of democracy. Not only was the original Magna Carta conceived here but also saw the first battle of the Second Barons’ War which resulted in the beginning of Parliament, and then the Battle of Naseby, after which democracy was achieved.
